“More than a nominal sequel to the hit 1959 film ‘Jula Juli Bintang Tiga’ (‘Jula Juli the Third Star’; watch it here: ‘Jula Juli Bintang Tujoh’ takes the fantastical nature of the first film, moved it up several notches and in the process revealed the pinnacle of filmic fantasy in the golden age of Singapore cinema. Both films take their primary narrative from the traditional bangsawan troupe, which in turn derives its stories from Middle Eastern sources.
“Seven Heavenly Princesses are banished by their father, the Heavenly King, to Earth in the form of a fruit. The fruit is consumed by an old childless lady, who in turn gives birth to seven girls. Meanwhile, seven Heavenly Princes, a Maniacal King of Ghosts, and an Earthly Prince (Nordin Ahmad) whose dreams are haunted by the ethereal princesses, are roaming the country in search of the seven missing princesses. An epic magical tussle ensues when all the players are confronted with the all-consuming desire to win the hand of the Heavenly Princesses.
“Veteran director B.N. Rao is no stranger to film fantasy having cut his teeth in fantasy films such as ‘Abu Hassan Penchuri’ (1955), the legendary genre-spawning ‘Pontianak’ (1957), its sequel ‘Dendam Pontianak’ (1957) and, of course, ‘Jula Juli Bintang Tiga’, to which this film owes only its name. B.N. Rao bestows the film with a kaleidoscope of “special effects” of the time. Freeze frames, matt-shots, double exposures, stop-motion, miniatures, outlandish costumes, magical set and make-up design, all contribute to the utter fantastical personality of ‘Jula Juli Bintang Tujoh’.
“However, the crowning achievement of this film remains the exceptional music by Zubir Said who makes use of unconventional musical instruments to imbibe the film with an otherworldly atmosphere and wonderment. Zubir Said topped this with the inclusion of one of the most memorable tunes he had written – the ‘keroncong’ style, ‘Nasib Malang’. Sang with romantic desperation by Nordin Ahmad at the closing moment of the film, the song exemplifies Zubir Said’s ability to draw on multi-faceted traditional musical styles. The song is still in circulation today, covered by a wide variety of contemporary singers in Indonesia and Malaysia.” (National Museum of Singapore Cinematheque, ‘Majulah! The Film Music of Zubir Said, 2012)
